Class 7 6/5/2024
Andrew, Mike, Sara, Jack (first time)
Dilemma of moving forward in content (low jab/jab defense) and catching up new student
- Stance
- Shape
- Purpose
- Footwork
- Basic rule
- Why
- Range game, attached and unattached - do this with Jack, while others pair
- Jab
- Shape and reason
- Body mechanics
- Simplified Shaolin Punch (exaggerated), morph back into correct posture
- Stationary, step, step and follow step, lunge
- Catch, parry, cover
- Spend some time getting correct body structure
- Change Cover, to testing just the structure of the block before working the timing - this paid off
- Progressive chaos
- Multiple reps each block
- Rotate
- Block of choice
- One for one
- High Jab sparring - doing surprisingly well
- Low Jab
- Shape and Reason
- Low Jab defense
- Elbow cover
- Elbow parry
- Elbows together
- Learn from previous class to have more steps here
- A bit quicker, self guided to rotate through all the blocks
- 1 for 1
- Low jab sparring
- High/Low Jab Chaos
- One side does 2 jabs, mix levels
- 2 for 2 - 2 jabs, mix levels, switch
- One side does arbitrary jabs
- Full high low jab sparring
- Comprehensive - no editing (since I often get behind on editing, thought I'd just stick it all here for students to look at)
- Highlight reel (to be edited)
- detailed edit (to be edited)
With Jack being first time we hit the Variable skill level and attendance dilemma - which worked surprisingly well this time in that he was able to get up to speed, and new content as a whole was introduced. Spent less time on the segments to get him up to speed - constraint led helped. Helps that others had gone through the material. Will count a body of experienced to help get to speed. Still a work in progress. Think, I'm getting the hang of more ecological-eque approach, which involves less hands on and more guiding them through the steps.
Did pickup from class 6 and Sara having problems making the jump from 1 level jab defense to multilevel jab - to good effect, everyone picked up pretty good. Key again is to see when we're not progressing, back up and do a more incremental change.
Re-emphasized the role of the strikers/defenders
